Climate change has been a major topic in the recent past and countries are following several initiatives to minimize the adverse affect on the environment caused by development. The Hirdaramani Group’s effort to create eco-friendly factories was recently rewarded when ‘Mihila’, one of its factories, was certified CarbonNeutral making it the first apparel factory in Asia to achieve that status.
HSBC Colombo Fashion Week which has established itself as the only fashion initiative that provides commercial opportunities for local designers has collaborated this year with 5 retailers creating a designer, retailer program. The launch of this unique programme will provide Sri Lankan designers the much needed exposure and opportunity to expand their retail presence and business growth. The retailer programme will also help local designers to stand on their feet and earn them livelihood opportunities. This initiative will go a long way in creating a sustainable local fashion design industry.
Textured Jersey Lanka (TJL) which raised Rs. 1.2 billion in an Initial Public Offering (IPO) last July is gearing to expand either by acquiring a garment factory in Sri Lanka or abroad or setting up a plant in their own land, officials said.
Sri Lanka's overall environmental performance is improving and the country has been ranked as a modest performer according to a study on global environment released during this year's World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland last week.
