Climate change has been a major topic in the recent past and countries are following several initiatives to minimize the adverse affect on the environment caused by development. The Hirdaramani Group’s effort to create eco-friendly factories was recently rewarded when ‘Mihila’, one of its factories, was certified CarbonNeutral making it the first apparel factory in Asia to achieve that status.
The certification would be the first milestone for Hirdramani in its ongoing effort to assess and reduce the carbon footprint in its factories in Sri Lanka and around the world, Hirdaramani Group, Director Nikhil Hirdaramani said.
This also marks a significant achievement for the country’s apperal industry as it builds its position in the global market as a flagship destination for ethical and sustainable manufacturing with the consumer demand shifting towards more ‘green’ products.
‘Mihila’ was Hirdaramani Group’s first eco-friendly factory. It is a LEED Gold certified building, the world’s first custom built green apparel factory which focuses on three main areas, energy consumption, water management and waste management. The company claims that it has reduced its carbon footprint.
The factory incorporates several unique technologies in driving lower energy consumption and follows the best waste water and waste management systems available.
Hirdaramani Group is a diversified organisation with 28 factories in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Vietnam with over 30,000 employees across six countries and industry segments.
